The Lands Down Under

Australia

Australia

Australia is truly like no other place on earth. Its geological isolation has resulted in the evolution of some of the most unique creatures on the planet. After a 9000-kilometer road trip from Melbourne to the Snowy Mountain area and up to the Red Centre desert, I discovered the extremes of some of this country’s most varied terrain and weather. From hailstorms in the mountains to a hellish +45C (113F) in the desert and navigating some of the earth’s most inhospitable places and animals. As with many of my adventures, this one was built around seeing wild horses (known as Brumbies), and which inevitably leads to a different kind of cultural learning far off the beaten path. I share with you now photos from my first dip into the antipodal world down-under, with the magnificent Brumby taking center stage.

New Zealand

New Zealand

Aotearoa New Zealand captivated me in an unexpected way. Like briefly meeting a stranger that you feel an instant connection with, I have only just begun my love affair with this extraordinary place. The wild horses provide me with a reason to travel, explore and learn, and as always, become a conduit to much greater things. The Kaimanawa Heritage Horses are a wonderful example of wild horse management done well, and the Aupouri horses roam a land of breath-taking long beaches, sand dunes and forests. From the ancient Kauri giant conifers to the silver ferns, and exotic Harakeke I felt transported to another place and time – perhaps to a land where “not all who wander are lost”.
