The wolves in these photos are not wild in the strictest sense of the word. But if you come to know wolves you come to also know that wolves are never really tamed. The images in this collection were captured at a wolf sanctuary where some of the wolves have been trained to tolerate people and follow cues. What is abundantly clear is that the wolves cooperate because they choose to, and they maintain a wildness in their soul so palpable that one feels extreme humility in their presence.
My history with wolves goes back to childhood. My mother gave me a wolf tooth when I was very young, from a wolf that she had killed while out hunting. I have met wolves in the wild in Alaska and have noted the persecution of wolves in many landscapes in other countries.
None of this prepared me for the experience I had in the fall of 2024 with Paddington, Timber, Riffraff and Harry. Spending time with these four wolves was one of the most intense and fascinating experiences of my life. Â Game of Thrones fans will notice the reference to GOT in some of the image titles. May we all celebrate the wildness and intelligence of these amazing animals.
